General Information:

Students attending Johnsburg High School will have the opportunity to earn the Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy. The Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy is a special designation added to student transcripts that indicates the student has demonstrated proficiency in two different languages: English plus an additional language. Students can also choose to work towards obtaining the Illinois State Commendation towards Biliteracy, which indicates a student has demonstrated progress towards proficiency in one or more languages. Students that meet the requirements for a Seal of Biliteracy or a Commendation towards Biliteracy will be awarded those designations on their transcript upon successful completion of Johnsburg High School graduation requirements.

Requirements for obtaining the Seal of Biliteracy/Commendation towards Biliteracy:

Students who wish to obtain a Seal of Biliteracy need to meet the requirements below:

Demonstrate proficiency in English by receiving an ELA score at the “meets” or “exceeds” level on the State accountability test (SAT) OR English learners may demonstrate proficiency (a score of 4.8) on the high school ACCESS test
Achieve a composite score equivalent to Intermediate High or higher on a standardized assessment of language proficiency for a secondary language (i.e., Spanish). If taking the AAPPL test, students must achieve a score of Intermediate High or higher on all four domains (components) of the test.

Students who wish to obtain the Commendation toward Biliteracy need to meet the requirements below:

Demonstrate proficiency in English by receiving an ELA score at the “meets” or “exceeds” level on the State accountability test (SAT) OR English learners may attain a composite 3.5 score on the high school ACCESS test
Achieve a composite score equivalent to Intermediate Low on a standardized assessment of language proficiency for a secondary language (i.e., Spanish). If taking the AAPPL test, students must achieve a score of Intermediate Low on all four domains (components) of the test.

Interested students should first choose a test date from the table listed below, noting the application deadlines and test fee due dates as listed. Students should fill out the application form after signing in with their school email account. When the application for the chosen date is opened (the application deadline becomes a clickable link when the application is open), students can then fill it out. Please note: in order to be admitted for testing on a test date, applicants must have submitted a completed application and paid the test fee to the JHS Office by the test fee due date.

*Applications for each test date will open the Monday after the previous test date.

Testing will occur on each test date between 9-12 a.m.

Students that have filled out an application for a test date and have paid the testing fee by the deadline will have details regarding the logistics of the test day sent to them the week testing is to take place.
